As a timber specialist, it’s fair to say that timber builds are right up our street (or should we say forests?) So we’re particularly excited for Log Cabin Day on June 25th. Though the celebration day originated in America on June 25th, 1986, by the Log Cabin Society (alongside the Bad Axe Society), it’s still a great event for people here in the UK to get involved with too!
Log cabins were extremely popular in America’s frontier days, an era that began with European settlement on the Atlantic coast in the 1600’s. Notched together and then sealed with mud or clay, they were simple and easy to maintain. Thanks to their sturdy structure and reliability, these constructions have become very symbolic as a result. The 9th President of the USA, William Henry Harrison, even used the log cabin as a symbol of his campaign to show America that he was a simple man and one of the people.
These days, log cabins are perhaps considered more of a luxury than a necessity. With stunning timber creating natural, gorgeous constructions, it’s not uncommon for people to still live in log cabins and certainly rent them as a unique and fun holiday accommodation alternative. Why not celebrate Log Cabin Day by renting one for the whole weekend?
Here at Duffield we’ll be celebrating Log Cabin Day by doing what we do best… working with timber, of course! If you’re a keen woodworker or carpenter looking to try an ambitious new project, you could even try making a log cabin (maybe a miniature one, if you’re not feeling so ambitious). Whatever you’re working on, we’d love to hear about your latest project. Chat to us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram!
