How Much Does Garden Fencing Cost in the UK?

3 min read

Fencing is typically priced by linear metre. Including materials and installation, costs for a 6ft (1.8m) tall garden fence usually range between £85 and £180 per linear metre.

A typical garden fencing length in the UK is around 15 metres, which means total costs will fall between £1,250 and £4,000, based on an average installation time of 1.5 days.

Materials – £50-£110+ per linear metre

As a guide, costs range from £50-£75 per linear metre for a budget softwood fence. For a premium slatted timber fence, you’ll be looking at £50-£110 per linear for a 6ft tall structure.

Pressure-treated softwood

These are the most common types of fence in the UK, made from spruce or pine and available from DIY stores. Popular styles include closeboardoverlap and hit-and-miss.

An entry-level solution with wooden posts and pressure-treated softwood panels usually costs £50-75 per metre.

This means, to cover a 15-metre garden boundary, materials costs alone would range from £750-£1,125.

Concrete posts and gravel boards will incur an extra £20-30 per metre, or £300-£450 across a typical garden.

Timber slats

Costs vary based on the species chosen and the height of the fence.

For a 6ft (1.8m) tall fence, softwood slats start at around £50 per metre, ranging up to £110 per metre for quality planed species like western red cedarSiberian larch, iroko or Thermo-ayous.

For western red cedar 18 x 45mm slats, costs are £110 per metre (including VAT) for a 6ft high stack (the 45mm slat and 10mm gap gives 55mm total per row, meaning 33 slats required to achieve a height of 6ft).

Labour – £250+ per day

Hiring a fencing contractor usually costs in the region of £250-£500 per day, depending on location and size of team. A straightforward garden fence can usually be completed in 1-2 days.

To put that in context, based on an average installation time of 1.5 days across a typical 15-metre garden boundary, labour alone accounts for roughly £33–£67 per linear metre.

If an existing fence needs to be removed, factor in additional costs for labour and waste disposal. Many contractors will charge around £20-30 per metre for ‘muck away’ removal services.

Total project costs

Overall, all-in costs (materials plus professional installation) are usually between £85 and £180+ per linear metre.

This means that for an average-sized UK garden fence (15 metres), costs will be between £1,250 and £4,000.

If you were to clear the site yourself, choose the budget-friendly products and install the fence as a DIY project, costs could realistically start from the £900 region. (this budgets for ‘hidden extras’ like post mix concrete, fixings, tools and delivery fees)

How much fencing do I need?

Measure the boundary you’re wishing to fence with a long tape measure or measuring wheel. This will give you a figure for total linear metres required.

Then, you can multiply the metres required by the cost per linear metre for the fencing product you require, or use the guide figures above – £85 to £180+ per linear metre, plus at least £250 for labour costs.

Make sure to order for 5-10% extra materials due to cutting, mistakes or odd angles. Also account for gates, which will require different posts and materials.
