Duffield Timber supplied Chartex® Thermo-Nordic Pine, wire-brushed and stained Coal Black, and Western Red Cedar coated in Colourflex® Natural for this contemporary home in Aberdeenshire. Both are Durability Class 2 timbers, factory-finished at our mill.
This contemporary home in Aberdeenshire, north-east Scotland, pairs two cladding timbers from Duffield Timber: black, textured Chartex® Thermo-Nordic Pine and Western Red Cedar in its natural reddish-brown tones. Both are Durability Class 2 timbers, suited to the exposure of a north-east Scottish site.
The main elevations clad in Chartex® Thermo-Nordic Pine. Thermo-Nordic Pine (Pinus sylvestris) is slow-grown Scandinavian pine, thermally modified with a heat-treatment at around 212°C in an oxygen-free atmosphere with no chemicals. The process raises it to Durability Class 2 and significantly reduces swelling and shrinkage. For the Chartex® finish, the grain is wire-brushed to bring out its texture, then coated in a Coal Black wood stain, giving the look of charred timber with a structured surface.
Against the black, Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) is used for the canopy, balcony and veranda. Sourced from coastal Canada, it is classified Durability Class 2 under BS EN 350. The boards were coated in Colourflex® Natural, a matt, non-film-forming stain that penetrates the timber and filters UV, helping the cedar hold its natural colour for longer. Colourflex® provides a service life of up to five years before first maintenance.
Both finishes were applied at our mill in Melmerby, North Yorkshire, using Teknos coatings, so every board arrived in Aberdeenshire evenly coated and ready to fix.
