In a breakthrough for the UK timber industry, Burnblock® sustainable fire retardant treatment combines with Remmers high-performance paint coatings.
Over the years, advancements in colour finishings have increased the design possibilities for timber cladding.
Projects in stone grey, coal black charred look and even RAL 5014 blue show how innovative new cladding options have been embraced to stunning effect.
To take things one step further, these colour coatings can now be combined with fire retardant treatments in one single system: Burnbock® with Remmers.
This gives architects, specifiers and home improvers access to a very unique cladding product, bringing together on-trend looks with Euroclass B-certified fire resistance.
A fully-certified fire treated and colour coated cladding solution
Because fire treatment typically affects coating uptake, colour and fire retardant coatings have historically been incompatible.
However, in 2025, Remmers successfully fire-tested their specialised coating system using Burnblock® treated timber.
The combined system achieves B-s2,d0 to EN 13501-1 – very limited contribution to fire, medium smoke emission, no flaming droplets.
Products treated with this new system came to market in 2026 and are supplied by only a select handful of merchants, which includes us at Duffield Timber.
The coating range currently covers three colours: Black, Mid Grey and Light Grey. Each colour is available in two finish tiers: single-coat (Weathered), and double-coat (Solid).

Burnblock® with Remmers products are suitable for both interior and exterior use, and arrive fully finished and ready to install.
If you’re unfamiliar with either Burnblock or Remmers, we’ve included a little more detail on each specific process.
Burnblock®: 100% natural, non-toxic and EN 13501-1 certified
Burnblock® is an industry-leading fire retardant treatment originally developed in 2003. We have partnered with Burnblock® since 2016.
The innovative process involves the impregnation of natural, non-toxic, fully biodegradable substances into the wood in a pressure vacuum tank.
This elevates timber to Euroclass B (B‑s1,d0), the second-highest European fire rating and the highest typically achievable for wood as a building material, with A reserved for non-combustible materials like concrete.

Remmers: state-of-the-art, high-performance wood colour coatings
Founded in Germany in 1949, Remmers is an industry leader in high-performance building chemicals, protective timber treatments and specialist wood coating systems.
Their range of wood colour coating systems are engineered to provide long-lasting protection, high performance and design flexibility outdoors:
- Moisture defence: Advanced microporous formulations form a water-repellent, breathable barrier. This allows internal moisture to escape without causing blistering, peeling or rot.
- UV shielding: Integrated UV absorbers shield the wood’s fibres from solar radiation, preventing discolouration and graying.
- Weather resistance: Highly elastic resins expand and contract dynamically with the natural movement of timber. This ensures the finish will not crack or flake over time.
- Design freedom and versatility: Available in a spectrum of semi-transparent stains to bold, opaque solid colours.
Remmers has been one of our valued partners for over five years and we’re proud to bring their state-of-the-art coating solutions to our customers.
