Garden Room & Outbuilding Timber Cladding: Ideas & Options

2 min read

Wooden garden studio with a curved roof opens to a patio; wicker seating and a small table outside, plus a chiminea, lush plants, and a brick wall in the background.

Timber cladding offers a smart, modern and nature-inspired finish for garden rooms, helping them to slot seamlessly into their outdoor surroundings.

Office? Gym? Yoga studio? Reading room? Home cinema? Or even a bar or ‘man cave’?

Garden rooms have grown hugely in popularity as a way of unlocking additional space for relaxation. These outbuildings even add value to your home – but only if they look the part!

For ideas and inspiration, we’ve put together some stunning examples of garden rooms we’ve proudly provided timber cladding for.

Western red cedar: a perennially-popular cladding species

With beauty and durability in abundance, western red cedar is one of the first species mentioned in relation to cladding.

Naturally resistant to moisture, insect damage and decay, western red cedar boasts a stunning mix of reds, salmon pinks and browns. These contemporary tones are only enhanced with a translucent stain.

Whilst cedar has dominated this market historically, today there are more options available to you.

Thermo-Ayous is a clear, knot-free grade very similar to cedar, but around 30% less expensive.

The thermal modification process gives this African hardwood a stunning mid-brown colour and enhances its outdoor stability and durability.

Garden Room 6

Another fabulous heat-treated cladding product is Thermo-Pine. This species is a more knotty, characterful timber that comes in around 40% cheaper.

Black, dark grey and light grey are also popular. Coating solutions like SiOO:X, Teknoclad and Chartex are three coating solutions for achieving these striking grayscale looks.

Modern single-story extension with light wood siding, a dark sloped roof, wide glass doors, and a stone-patio; leafless shrubs and chairs nearby.
SiOO:X light grey in a vertical orientation with a thinner board
Modern gray wooden-clad building with sloped metal roof and skylight; black vent pipe on the roof, and a gravel path with shrubs beside a garden.
Modern house exterior with dark vertical siding, large glass doors and windows, a light brick base, white side wall, and a glass-railed balcony.
Teknoclad in stone grey

The grey look can also be achieved naturally by allowing uncoated cladding to weather, as evidenced by this stunning outbuilding.

Whilst not so widespread today, classics like Siberian larch and Douglas fir will always have a place in people's hearts.
