Duffield Timber supplied 20 x 70mm Thermo-Nordic Pine boards in our square-edged open cladding profile (DTC49) for this new-build family home. Fitted vertically and left uncoated, the cladding is shown here after 12 months of natural weathering.
This new-build home is clad in Thermo-Nordic Pine from Duffield Timber, machined to our square-edged open cladding profile at 20 x 70mm. The boards run vertically in long lengths up the front gables, with an open gap between each one.

Open cladding leaves a narrow gap between planed, square-edged boards, so each board is defined by its own shadow line. Here those lines run the full height of the gables, and the shadows shift as the sun moves across the façade through the day.

Thermo-Nordic Pine (Pinus sylvestris) is slow-grown Scandinavian pine, heat-treated at around 212°C in an oxygen-free atmosphere with no chemicals. The process raises it to Durability Class 2 and significantly reduces swelling and shrinkage. That matters for open cladding, where the edges of each board are exposed as well as the face, and stable boards help keep the gaps between them consistent.

The owners chose to leave the cladding uncoated so it would silver naturally and settle into its surroundings. Uncoated Thermo-Nordic Pine weathers from its original caramel-brown towards silver-grey, and the final photograph shows the house after 12 months.
