We were delighted to supply uncoated Canadian Douglas fir slatted cladding for the new Knavesmire entrance at York Racecourse.
York Racecourse has hosted racing on the Knavesmire since 1731.
The course's new Knavesmire entrance puts that heritage front and centre, flanked by restored cast-iron turnstiles and a photographic timeline running from the earliest meetings to the present day.
We were thrilled to be involved in a project at such an iconic venue, supplying Canadian Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) cladding machined to a planed square edge (PSE) profile at 20 x 55mm.
Fitted vertically across the angled wing walls either side of the entrance, the slats offer a clean look that complements the signage and heritage displays.
The same section continues inside, lining the ceiling of the walkway that leads racegoers through to the course.
Douglas Fir is a durability Class 3 softwood (moderately durable) prized for its warm reddish-brown heartwood, straight grain and excellent strength to weight ratio.
This Canadian-grown stock is noted for its tight, consistent grain. This suits it well to precision machining and slatted applications, where every piece is on show.
The slats were supplied uncoated, planed to a smooth finish straight from the mill.
Left untreated, the exterior façade will weather gradually from its warm reddish-brown tones towards a soft silver-grey, a natural evolution in keeping with the heritage setting.
Sheltered from sun and rain, the walkway ceiling will retain the timber's original colour.
Douglas fir is one of our special-order species: brought in to order and machined to specification at our North Yorkshire factory.
Every slat was planed to a uniform 20 x 55mm section before delivery, ensuring a consistent finish across the façade and soffit alike.
